Today we completed Activity 69, Forecasting Weather. Students learned the different symbols of a weather forecast, and about different concepts such as warm/cold fronts and high/low pressure. Students then applied these concepts by choosing a day in the textbook on pages E-88 and E-89. If you missed class today, please pick one of the days (August 24th-31) and create a weather forecast for the state of Iowa on Student Sheet 69.2. Homework is Act. 69 Analysis 1-3. Science Fair proposals are due on MONDAY and the Weather and Atmosphere unit test is on WEDNESDAY. I have attached the study guide. ![]()

The Mount St. Helens Field Trip has been rescheduled for Monday May 19th. We will be departing at the beginning of first period, and are predicting to arrive back at the school at 5pm. The field trip is $15- Please let me know if money is an issue and we will make arrangements. ![]()
Today students completed Activity 68 "Worldwide Wind." We investigated the global prevailing winds, and discussed why wind occurs. We then went to the computer lab to complete Act. 68. Please go to http://sepuplhs.org/middle/iaes/students/simulations/sepup_winds5.html Then, follow the instructions on the packet. If you are doing this by yourself at home, you will need to find the wind direction data for 4 cities. You can exchange your data with a classmate and he or she can fill you in on the other 12 cities. Homework is to complete the analysis questions that are IN the packet. Also, initial science fair proposals are due MONDAY. ![]()
Today we went outside and tested our anemometers and wind vanes. We then came back inside and fixed and/or modified the design of our devices and then went back outside to do a second round of trials. Homework is Activity 67 Analysis questions 1-3. (Except 2nd period, there is no homework yet.)
Today in our table groups we assembled our anemometers to measure wind speed and wind vanes to measure wind direction. This took the entire class period. There is no homework. Students should know that this is the new quarter, and thus have a fresh start in science. I highly encourage to write in their planner and lab notebooks every day, and come in to make up assignments in the morning by appointment. Science fair is coming up (check out the science fair page), and students this quarter will be getting notebook grades. There is no homework today.
Today we passed back papers and turned in any missing assignments for the grading period. We then discussed Science Fair. Below I have attached the information that was passed out for science fair. Some things to note: Science Fair Help Sessions are available EVERY Tuesday (Starting January 28) in the Library from 8:15am-9:00am. Students can come in for access to computers, printers, books, and other resources. Adults will also be present to assist with the process and offer help/advise. If you would like help with your science fair project, I highly encourage you to take advantage of this resource! I have attached the science fair handout. Please also check out the Science Fair page for other information/documents. ![]()

Today we passed back work, and discussed grades. I also checked in with each student about his or her grade and assignments. All student work is due by today, (unless you were gone on the field trip- you have until tomorrow). Students then started Activity 67 part A, and constructed their design for their group's anemometer and wind vane. Student homework is to finish this design so construction can begin tomorrow. ![]()

Today 1st, 3rd, and 4th periods worked on Activity 65, examining the historical events of the atmosphere. If you missed class today, I have taken pictures of the atmosphere cards, so you can complete the activity at home. Second period went to the computer lab to complete Activity 64. Homework is Act. 65 Analysis 1-3. Some things to note: ALL work is due by Thursday so I can grade them in time for the end of the grading period. Also, if you have more than one D or F on your report card, you are in jeopardy of not walking or participating in 8th grade promotion... Please keep working hard on your grades.
Today we went to the computer lab (except for 2nd period had an assembly) and completed Activity 64 " Earth's Atmosphere". This can be completed at home if you were absent today. Please go to: http://sepuplhs.org/middle/iaes/students/simulations/sepup_atmosphere5.html Students can follow the procedure in the textbook, which I have attached as a pdf. Student homework is Act. 64 Analysis 1-4. ![]()
