Today students used the entire class time to complete Act. 55 lab by monitoring the heating and cooling temperatures of sand and water, as Amon so greatly demonstrates in the picture below. We will finish the analysis/conclusion tomorrow. If you were absent, you will need to make this u when we get back from break. The lab needs a minimum of 40 minutes, so please make an appointment with me if you need to come in early to do the lab.

Today was late start day, so we used the majority of class time to finalize pages 2-4 of our lab design for our science inquiry work samples. We will be doing our lab tomorrow, so please have these ready to go. Make sure to use complete sentences and check for spelling/grammar mistakes.
Today students started class with a warm up by writing what they predicted to be the main differences and similarities with water and land and how they heat up, cool down, and hold on to heat. Students then began working with their groups to design an investigation for Activity 55 "Heating Earth's Surfaces." Students will be investigating how land and water temperature respond to heat, and how they retain/release heat. Please use the attached document for your investigation (FYI this is a work sample). Homework for tonight will be to finish designing the experiment, as we will be do the lab tomorrow. If your table group did not finish designing the experiment, please write a rough draft tonight and I will approve or advise revision at the beginning of class before we begin the lab. ![]()
Today students learned how to roughly calculate how much of the Earth's surface is covered by land vs water. Students used Student Sheet 54.1 to roughly count water and land by counting the squares and making a tally marks for each category. Students then shared data with their groups to calculate the mean percentage of land and water for their groups, and then lastly combined all data to find the class data set. Student homework is Analysis questions 1 and 2. ![]()
As a result of the field trip yesterday, many students did not see the video. Students voted to watch the video again as a result. The learning goal, language goal, etc. are the same from yesterday, and are listed under Thursday's post. We took our lab notebook quiz at the end of the period. Student homework is to get all work turned in by Monday at the latest- I will not be accepting any work from the first half of the quarter past Monday. Have a great weekend!
Hey y'all- I'm out sick today with a sore throat. We will pick back up where we left on Tuesday on Friday. Today with a substitute the class watched a video on the atmosphere and students took notes that are fair game for the notebook quiz tomorrow. I have posted the board agenda and the video below. Agenda (12/12/13) · Video – “Earth the Power of the Planet- Atmosphere” · (Notes on video) Homework- Finish video (posted on website)- Notebook Quiz tomorrow Learning Goal- I can describe how the atmosphere influences weather, land forms, and climate. Language Goal- Take notes and summarize concepts of the atmosphere Happy day off 8th graders! Some of you will miss class tomorrow because you are going on the Backstage pass field trip. If you would like to get a head start on your day off, please finish Activity 54 and answer analysis question #2. Student sheet 54.1 is attached on Tuesdays blog entry.
Today we reviewed concepts from Activity 53 and we watched a couple videos explaining the causes and factors of climate. We also watched parts of a longer video (we fast forwarded through some of it) of a flash flood in Arizona, and discussed how an area that is dry and arid could be prone to flash flooding. Periods 3 and 4 were able to start Activity 54, though we did not finish. ![]()
Today we started class by getting new seats. We then worked on Activity 53 and learned about the difference between climate and weather. I also stamped Activity 51 from last week. Homework is Activity 53 Analysis 1-4. ![]()
